Case file / Ten years ago, at this school

A kid nobody comes looking for
meets a kid nobody looked for.

Night study, the self-study period after classes at Korean high schools, ends at 22:00. Just a little longer and you could have gone home, but a quick nap turned into a deep sleep. You wake up at 22:50. The classroom is empty and the hallway lights are off. The front gate is locked, too. You have to find the keys and get out of the school.

Ten years ago, a student disappeared from this school. Newspaper clippings, graffiti and things someone left behind still hold traces of that day. Wander the familiar hallways long enough and you will realize this night is not just a dream.

Survival rules / Rule-learning stealth

Don’t know the rule and you die.
Die and you learn a rule.

There are no guns or other weapons. Bring your flashlight, salt, red beans, matches and mugwort.
You have to hold out with tools taken from Korean folklore. And keep looking behind you.

Rule 01

Look away and she comes.

The girl from the next classroom

Once your eyes meet, she follows you all night. She stops only while you are looking at her.

The girl from the next classroom, in a classroom
Rule 02

Don’t follow the voice.

Jangsanbeom

On the hill behind the school, it calls to you in the voice of your mother or a friend. At the fork, go the opposite way from the voice.

Rule 03

Only 8 seconds of silence.

The music room band

After midnight, the band plays for 40 seconds and goes silent for 8. Go in only when the music stops.

The music room band
Rule 04

Don’t look up.

Eodukshini

The more you look up at it, the bigger it grows. If you run into it at the end of the second-floor hallway, lower your head.

When you die, you start again from that floor’s checkpoint. The ghost rules you have learned and the evidence you have read stay in your records.

What is Ghost Story mode?

A challenge mode that unlocks once you reach the Seal ending in Night One. So much dark energy has built up in the school that every ghost has been set loose. Your goal is to escape through the front gate. It is planned for the full game and is not in the demo.

It looked normal in the daytime.

The demo is for 64-bit Windows. The itch.io version runs as soon as you unzip it. The STOVE version installs through the STOVE PC client. The full game is being prepared in 64-bit and 32-bit builds.

The demo saves your progress to save.dat and progress.dat in the same folder as the executable. Run it from a folder you can write to, and keep both save files together if you want to carry on later.

This is an unsigned program made by an individual developer, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning. Check that you downloaded the file from an official store linked on this page, and choose ‘More info → Run anyway’ only if you trust the source.

The demo is rated 15+ in Korea. It has loud sounds, flashing lights and jump scares.

In Settings you can change the control scheme, mouse sensitivity, volume and low-spec mode.

Design · scenario · direction · art and sound direction: Geonho (K-magpie)

Programming, procedural graphics and sound synthesis were done in collaboration with Claude (Anthropic). The illustrations were made with ChatGPT image generation, then picked and retouched by Geonho.

Han Seoyeon’s voice, some sound effects and the main theme were synthesized with ElevenLabs. Geonho wrote the script and directed the scenes.

The game draws on Jangsanbeom, Eodukshini, Yagwanggwi, the dokkaebi and Korean school ghost stories. The folklore and old records about these creatures are collected in our Korean Ghosts & Monsters encyclopedia (in Korean: Eodukshini · Yagwanggwi · Dokkaebi). This work is fiction and has no connection to real people, events or organizations.
